Yuvraj Singh Opens Up on The Side Effect of IPL on Youngsters
Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has taken a dig at the Indian Premier League (IPL) for diverting the focus of the youngsters from the red-ball cricket. The veteran urges the upcoming generation to take Test cricket as their first choice option in a bid to excel in the foreseeable future.
Yuvraj Singh is an experienced IPL player so he knows very well what is good for the youngsters. The sixer king has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals). He last featured in the cash-rich league for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2019 after which he retired from the game. The southpaw has won the title for SRH and MI in 2016 and 2019 respectively.
Yuvraj Singh on IPL:
According to the ex-India batsman, the hefty money offered by the franchise misleads the youngsters and they tend to focus more on IPL rather than playing an extended version of the game. Further, he also urged the players to respect the seniors because it will help them in becoming big cricketers.
“IPL offers big money and it takes away the focus (from the youngsters). Not the current lot. They want to play Tests but the younger lot, who play one-day cricket mostly, their focus is to play IPL and not four-day cricket for the states,” Yuvraj Singh told Sportstar.
“From the interaction with the youngsters, you realize that they can do with more respect for the seniors. It is not the same that we gave to our seniors. There has to be a certain amount of respect towards the seniors, who have taught you so much,” he added.
After retiring from all forms of cricket in 2019 because he could not make it to 2019 World Cup squad, Yuvraj plays in foreign franchise leagues like Global T20 Canada and Abu Dhabi T10 League. He also last featured in the Road Safety World Tournament 2020 which now stands postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
