Zaheer Khan makes a comeback in India’s Test team for South Africa, Gambhir overlooked
Experienced pacer Zaheer Khan and Ambati Rayudu, for the first team, is back in India’s Test team for next month’s tour of South Africa. Meanwhile, Opener Gautam Gambhir is inexplicably not selected for India’s tour of South Africa.
Earlier, BCCI agreed to a two Test and three One-day International tour of South Africa after the home series against West Indies thus ending a period of uncertainty, which began when the BCCI rejecting Cricket South Africa’s original itinerary of three Test, seven ODI and 2 T20s. The reason was BCCI’s fight with Haroon Lorgat who was appointed chief executive, and thus the most poweful body in world cricket got its work done by blatantly rejecting the earlier proposal.
Back to the selection issue now, the team for the ODIs, which precedes the Test series, picks itself except for a couple of places. There were doubts about Yuvraj Singh as his return to the ODI team has not got according to plan so far. In fact Yuvraj Singh hasn’t done anything significant apart from his 35-ball 77 in the T20 international against Australia at Rajkot.
Ambati Rayudu, on the other hand, has made the Test squad. Whether he will get a chance to play in the XI is contentious. But Zaheer’s return has been quite sensational. The veteran pacer, who last played a Test match against England at home in Kolkata in December 2012, has been side-lined due to lack of fitness and form. But he has been among wickets in Ranji Trophy and his experience has helped him getting picked.
