  • Tournament History

It is a historic moment for India who is going to participate for the first time in any FIFA competition by virtue of being a host nation.


  • Present Status (for 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup)

i) The Journey: As India is a host, it has automatically qualified for this tournament. India had also participated in the 2016 AFC U-16 Championship which was the other AFC teams’ qualifications round for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup. In the 2016 AFC U-16 Championship hosts India was eliminated from the Group stage where they had finished in the last place of Group A.

However, India’s performances have improved since then, and it had played a lot of practice matches before the starting of this tournament.


ii) Head Coach: Luis Norton de Matos (Nationality – Portugal) had been appointed as a head coach for India U-17 team on 1st March 2017. He believes in playing fast pace football with a strong emphasis on full-backs bombarding up and down with a steady defense.
