After a less than impressive season in Spain, Barcelona are ready to make some wholesale changes to their squad this summer.

Having already replaced their outgoing boss Luis Enrique with Ernesto Valverde, they are now determined to improve the quality in the squad to try and regain the La Liga title from Real Madrid next season.

They are constantly linked with some of the finest players in world football for a move this summer and the latest name on their radar is Atletico Madrid man Saul Niguez.

Barcelona are desperate for a midfielder who can replace Andres Iniesta who is slowly fading away.

They have already been looking at some of the finest players in Europe and PSG’s Italian mastermind Marco Verratti is favourites to join the club before the start of the next season.

But according to Spanish news outfit AS, Barcelona are looking at the Atletico Madrid midfielder as a possible choice, if they miss out on Verratti this summer.

Atletico Madrid are currently in a bad position as they have been hit by an FFP ruling that restricts them from signing any players in the summer transfer window this year.

This will mean that they will not be willing to sell any of their players, let alone a first team player like Niguez but it is understood that Barcelona are confident of landing him if they miss out on Verratti.

The report goes on to claim that Niguez, now 23, fits into Valverde’s policy of signing for the future and that he is the perfect player for the 4-3-3 system that former Bilbao manager is expected to bring to the Camp Nou next season.

It is also understood that Barcelona had scouts watching over the midfielder in almost every game in the previous year.

Barcelona are now planning to send technical, Robert, to the Euro Under-21 semi-final to watch Saúl and could step up their interest in the player in the upcoming days.

However, the player has a buy-out clause of around €80m and the Camp Nou outfit are ready to get some first-hand information from the player’s agent Jorge Mendes, who will be in Barcelona later this week.
