Botafogo keep Libertadores hopes alive

Rio de Janeiro, Oct 10 (IANS) Bruno Silva scored in second-half injury time to hand Botafogo a 1-0 victory over Figueirense in Brazil’s Serie A championship.

The result in the southern city of Florianopolis on Sunday evening lifted the Rio de Janeiro club to seventh in the standings, keeping alive their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Copa Libertadores, reports Xinhua.

Under new rules approved last week, the top six teams at the end of the Serie A season will qualify for South America’s top premier club competition.

Meanwhile Flamengo kept the pressure on league leaders Palmeiras with a 3-0 victory over Santa Cruz. But Palmeiras remained three points ahead of their Rio rivals with a 2-0 win at America Mineiro.
