Brazil’s Internacional Relegated For First Time

Rio de Janeiro, Dec 12 (IANS) Three-time Brazilian Serie A champions Internacional have been relegated to the country’s Serie B for the first time ever following a 1-1 draw at Fluminense.

Meanwhile, Atletico Paranaense and Botafogo secured berths in next year’s Copa Libertadores after Sunday’s final round of Serie A matches, reports Xinhua.

Atletico earned a 0-0 draw with Flamengo, while Botafogo won 1-0 at Gremio to secure sixth place in the standings and Brazil’s last Copa Libertadores berth.

Palmeiras, who clinched their first Serie A title in 22 years last month, finished the season with a 2-1 victory at Vitoria.

Last year’s champions Corinthians lost 3-2 at Cruzeiro, a result that left them seventh and outside of the Libertadores places.

The 38th and final round of fixtures has been postponed by a week after a plane crash that killed most of the players, staff and directors at Serie A club Chapecoense.

Chapecoense’s final match of the season against Atletico Mineiro was abandoned.
