Revealed – After Pedro Chelsea ALMOST hijacked Anthony Martial
Manchester United signed Anthony Martial from AS Monaco on the deadline day for a whopping £36 million which is a world record for a teenager.
The 19-year-old Frenchman attracted interest from a lot of European giants prior to the move with Chelsea also interested in the youngster.
The Sunday Times report that Chelsea tried to hijack the deal for the young sensation. Roman Abramovich was ready to match United’s record offer for the 19-year-old French forward only to be told the deal had been closed.
Chelsea were prepared to bring the striker for the 2016-17 campaign and were prepared to match United’s bid to make the youngster, the most expensive teenager in history. If all the performance-related payments in United’s agreement with AS Monaco are triggered, Martial’s fee will rank among the fourth highest of all time.
Chelsea hijacked United’s attempt to sign Pedro from Barcelona and tried to do the same for Martial.
The 19-year-old Frenchman joined Monaco in 2013 and he has become a first-team regular for the club, scoring 12 goals in all competitions; Martial also has a goal and two assists in four matches so far this season.
The striker has been assigned the number 9 shirt at Old Trafford and will be a key figure for Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United team.
Manchester United would not spend money for such a talented youngster who has tipped to be the next ‘Theirry Henry’ of France.
Martial, who was previously a target for Tottenham, has played at every level from Under-16 to Under-21 for France. Spurs were interested in a deal worth around £18m for Martial back in June.
Anthony Martial addition to the United squad would be a huge boost for the side as Louis van Gaal desperately wanted a striker who could partner Wayne Rooney up front.
