Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is reportedly demanding a new contract that will see him earn massive £200,000 per week wages which would put him on par with the likes of Eden Hazard and Manchester United’s David de Gea.
Courtois has developed himself into one of the best goalkeepers in the world during his time at Stamford Bridge and is one of the key players for the club. Still 25, the Belgian international is only expected to get better with the age as goalkeepers often get into their prime after crossing 30 years.
The young shot stopper is currently earning only £90,000 on his deal that will expire in the summer of 2019. The Blues are determined to tie down on a long term deal as he has been linked with European champions Real Madrid in the recent past.
Los Blancos are linked with a potential signing for Courtois as they are looking for a world class player in their goal. Manchester United’s David de Gea and AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma are also linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
The wage demands by Courtois meant Chelsea will need to double his wages which the club are currently not willing to do. However, the Blues expect to hold the talks with the player to offer a new deal before the start of new season, according to Daily Mail.
Courtois had developed into a fine goalkeeper during his three year loan spell with Atletico Madrid during which he helped the club to win La Liga, Copa del Rey and Europa League. He moved back to Stamford Bridge and displaced Petr Cech to become No.1 the following season and played an important role in Blues’ two Premier League winning seasons in past three years.
Chelsea are currently short of goalkeeping options in their squad as Asmir Begovic left the club for Bournemouth. The club are believed to be closing in on a deal for former Manchester City player Willy Caballero, who is a free agent, as a backup for Courtois for next season.
A new deal for Courtois is high on Chelsea’s priorities this summer despite their ambitious plans to land quality players to increase depth in their squad ahead of the new season.
