Corinthians sack coach Cristovao Borges

Sao Paulo, Sep 18 (IANS) Brazilian football champions Corinthians have sacked coach Cristovao Borges after a poor run of results that left them fifth in this season’s Serie A.

The 57-year-old was dismissed on Saturday after Corinthians’ 0-2 home loss to league leaders Palmeiras, reports Xinhua.

“Cristovao is a hard worker and a very dedicated person but in football you need results,” Corinthians president Roberto de Andrade said.

Fabio Carille, who worked as an assistant under Cristovao, will assume the head coaching role on an interim basis, Andrade said.

Cristovao led Corinthians to seven wins, six defeats and five draws after replacing Tite, who resigned to take charge of Brazil’s national team in June.
