EPL Match Report: Late Chelsea surge sees them beat Norwich 3-1
Chelsea beat Norwich City 3-1 in their Premier League encounter at Carrow Road on Sunday thanks to goals from Oscar, Eden Hazard and Willian, while Anthony Pilkington got a consolation goal for the hosts Norwich.
Demba Ba had almost an instantaneous effect on Chelsea after getting just his second start of the season. The Senegal international brought a hopeful ball forward under control inside the box before laying off for Brazilian Oscar to shoot low and hard past Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy and open the scoring inside first five minutes.
Ba made his presence felt throughout the half, as he troubled Norwich defenders throughout the first-half. The Senegalese almost scored his first goal of the season after out-muscling Ruddy on the edge of the box. He swivelled and shot past the stranded Ruddy but Norwich defender Sebastian Bassong covered on the goal line.
Norwich, though, responded quickly as Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech made a close range save from Jonny Howson after some good play down the right from Robert Snodgrass and Ricky van Wolfswinkel created Norwich’s best chance of the half.
After the half-time interval Mourinho’s men should have doubled their advantage, but Ba failed to direct Ramires’ centre on target from inside the six-yard box.
They were made to rue that miss in the 68th minute when Pilkington got in front of David Luiz to head the Canaries level.
Chelsea then went all-out as Mourinho made positive substitution by bringing on Eden Hazard, Willian and Eto’o in place of Ashley Cole, Mata and Ba respectively. But it was Branislav Ivanovic who let fly from 25-yards out which saw Ruddy make a decent save.
However Hazard did regain the lead for his side with powerful low strike that squirmed under Ruddy and just over the line.
Brazilian star Willian left the best to last curling a 20-yard strike into the top corner of the net to confirm the win for Chelsea which propels them to a third in the table.
