Everton overcome resillient Aston Villa, win 2-0

Romelu Lukaku and Leon Osman registered their names on the scoresheet as Everton stole a narrow but impressive win away against Aston Villa

The hosts created the better chances in the opening exchanges, but found the Toffees goalkeeper in excellent form.

After an even start to the game, Villa were given a great opportunity to take the lead when Seamus Coleman fouled Christian Benteke in the box and they were awarded a penalty.

The Belgian picked himself up and struck a decent penalty towards the corner, but was denied by an excellent save from Tim Howard.

Everton’s goalkeeper had to be in good form again shortly afterwards, first denying Benteke and then diving at the feet of Andreas Weimann in a one-on-one, but Villa would feel that they should have done better.

The away side then created their first real chance when Romelu Lukaku met Coleman’s cross, but Brad Guzan was equal to the task as he reacted well to turn his header wide.

There were few chances after that and Villa will be wondering how they are not ahead after going into half-time.

The second half was less open, with both defences on guard, but Lukaku opened the scoring midway through the half. Leon Osman’s fine run allowed him to square the ball to the Chelsea man, who finished smartly past Guzan at his near post to give Everton the advantage.

Villa had been more than one chance to equalize in the match, but increasingly looked like that they had ran out of ideas, and it was no surprise when Everton made it two, Osman again cropping up with a cool finish from the edge of the area after being picked out by Gareth Barry.

That proved enough for Everton, as their opponents were unable to provide any more pressure after disappointingly fading away as the game went on. Paul Lambert’s side have shown plenty of promise this season, but they haven’t quite had the points to show for it – today was no different.
