FIFA U20 World Cup Players to Watch Out: Group C 

With the FIFA U20 World Cup having started, we look at some of the players to watch out for, who could make a difference for their sides. Here, we look at some of the players who could leave a mark from Group C.

HakanÇalhanoğlu (Turkey)

HakanÇalhanoğlu plays as an attacking midfielder for Karlsruher SC on loan from Hamburger SV.He signed for Hamburger SV from Karlsruher SC in September 2012 for a fee of €2.5 million, but was loaned back to Karlsruher. The Turkish-German footballer has represented the Turkish national team at all age levels- U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21, and is expected to play a big part in this year’s World Cup for the hosts.  

KarimFrei (Turkey)

Following a youth career at Grasshopper in Switzerland, Frei joined Fulham in 2010, where he made his first team debut in 2011. Frei joined Cardiff City on loan for two months in 2012, but was recalled to Fulham after only 3 appearances. After representing Switzerland at the U15, U18 and U21 levels, Frei switched national team allegiances from Switzerland to Turkey in June 2012, where the winger already has 4 senior appearances.  

Dimitris Kolovos (Greece)

Kolovos is an attacking midfielder who currently plays for Panionios in the Greek Superleague.The 19 year old ace recently signed a contract extension that will keep him at the club till 2016. He is seen as one of the most promising players of Panioniosand the team reportedly rejected a €250,000 transfer offer from Fiorentina during the January transfer period of 2012.  

Maikon Orellana (El Salvador)

MaikonOrellana has raised many eyebrows at such a young age. He may not be the tallest of players, but his skill on the ball with both legs makes him a unique player. Involved with Real Salt Lake’s Academy since the age of 13, Maikon had caught the attention of ex-Real Madrid coach Manuel Pelligrini and was even invited to the Real Madrid Academy in Spain. After passing on that opportunity Maikon impressed in the United States, catching the attention of the U.S. Soccer Federation, who had expressed their interest in calling him up once the adequate papers are put in place. He later joined Danish club Brondby.  

Jhon Cordoba (Colombia)

Born in Istmina, Chocó, Córdoba is a forward who had already made an impression with Envigado in Colombia’s CategoríaPrimera A by age 18. He signed with Mexican PrimeraDivisión side Jaguares de Chiapas in July 2012, and noticeably scored a goal in a 1-0 victory in the Clausura 2013 Copa MX.Cordoba was called up to the 2013 South American Youth Championship games to represent Colombia as well as the 2013 Toulon Tournament. A powerful striker, Cordoba’s most noticeable traits give regard to his physical traits: tall and large with very powerful shots as his major most noticeable trademark. His speed and wonderful pace has been a major factor in most games that he plays. Due to his size, he carries natural talent with balls that come from the air. This style of play is well-known with Ivorian international Didier Drogba who Cordoba has been compared with on many occasions.  

Juan Fernando Quintero (Colombia)

Quintero plays as a midfielder for the Serie A club Pescara, whom he joined months after joining Colombian giants Nacional, and has wasted no time in impressing European scouts.He has been mentioned among the more coveted players in European football by The Times of London. At only 19, Quintero has received praise for his impressive performances since moving to Italy. During his time of the 2013 South American Youth Championship, he has been recognized as not only one of the most promising youth aspects from not only South America, but the world. Quintero is well known for his creativity for playmaking and his ball control and dribbling has stood him out from most players his age as well as his free kicks. Left footed, Quintero is sometimes considered to be another ‘James Rodríguez’ due to their similar traits although Rodriguez plays more of a forward midfielder/winger whereas Quintero plays more in a neutral mid-center position.
