The FIFA World Cup is almost upon us, as Sportzwiki runs down the top five African players who will grace the grandest stage of them all. All eyes from the world’s largest continent will be on these star players, as they will look to etch their name in World Cup lore.
- YAYA TOURE (Ivory Coast)
The younger half of the Toure brothers, Yaya, would look for more of the same after a scintillating season with Manchester City. Toure was the driving force behind double-winning City, and is deemed to be one of the best midfielders on the planet at present. His imposing physique and technique of brilliance mixes beauty with the beast, as Toure will look to break Ivory Coast’s group stage jinx.
- DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast)
Having had a fairy tale ending to his Chelsea story, Didier Drogba will have similar ambitions as he pulls on the tangerine jersey for perhaps the last time at a World Cup in his long and illustrious career. Drogba is expected to spearhead Ivory Coast’s attack, and his advancing years hasn’t slowed him more than a stride. Drogba remains fearless as ever, and his finishing is still cultured.
- SAMUEL ETO’O (Cameroon)
Another old man in the form of Cameroon captain Eto’o. Eto’o hasn’t had a big season at club level with Chelsea, but he will be expected to carry the goalscoring burden of the nation once the World Cup commences. Eto’o is feared all over the world as one of the trickiest penalty box customers, and he will do well to take Cameroon further beyond the group stages.
- KEVIN-PRINCE BOATENG (Ghana)
Ghana’s most recognizable player, Kevin-Prince Boateng, has a job to do this summer as he looks to propel Ghana to newer heights. Boateng had a relatively mixed first season at Schalke, where he has turned into a forward. His attacking intent was never in question, only thing of concern was his switching on and off during games. Boateng is experienced enough, and will be a guiding light for Ghana in Brazil.
- VINCENT ENYEAMA (Nigeria)
The Nigerian shot-stopper had a record-breaking season at Lille where he broke long-standing records of not conceding goals, but would be facing a far harder and more motivated group of players when his Nigeria kicks off in Brazil. Enyeama is a rock at the back; his insurance is very much the order of the day as Nigeria would look for upsets against the bigger teams.
