FIFA World Cup 2018: Xavi Disappointed with Real Madrid
Xavi is unhappy with Real Madrid's call to announce Julen Lopetegui as their head coach at this point.

Former Spain captain, Xavi is furious about the current situation of Spain who sacked the head coach just 24 hours before the FIFA World Cup 2018.

The Barcelona star has criticized Real Madrid for announcing Julen Loptegui as their coach now. 24 hours after the declaration, the Spain President sacked him with immediate effect.

Xavi was unhappy with the timing of the announcement of Lopetegui’s Madrid move,

I am not the person to talk about it [Lopetegui joining Madrid]. It was not the most ideal or opportune moment.”

Though he believes Spain can still have a shot at the World Cup:

“You never know, the players have already seen it all and sure, they can play a good role at the World Cup. There is Sergio Ramos, Pique and Iniesta. There are very prepared people and a very good atmosphere. It’s not the best situation, but at the same time, it unites them more, and they give more of themselves, you never know.”

The President of Spain claimed he only became aware of Lopetegui’s decision five minutes before Tuesday’s official announcement. The furious boss missed the voting for the 2026 World Cup to fire Lopetegui in person.

Sam Allardyce, who got sacked, as England manager also believes Spain had no option but to sack Julen Lopetegui,

“I couldn’t see any other option for them than to sack him if they had no idea this was happening. It’s a very difficult predicament that they would not have been expecting to be in. Let’s hope it doesn’t affect the players when they get there,”

“If they are comfortable with the man that replaces him then they will be able to get on with it. Managers come, and managers go.”

The tournament kicks-off on Thursday. Spain will be playing their first match against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on 16 June.
