Brazilian attacking midfielder Alex Teixeira has verbally agreed to join Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea squad, according to a report from Daily Express.

Chelsea are now in talks with Ukraine club Shakhtar Donetsk over the proposed fee and with the highly-rated player’s representatives over a five-year contract.

A fee of around £30m has been proposed for the 25-year-old star, who is the top scorer in Europe. Teixeira, a Manchester United target, has netted a staggering 26 strikes in 26 matches this season

The Blues are still in pursuit for the Brazil hotshot despite the exit of Jose Mourinho last week because they regard Teixeira as the only man who can provide the missing firepower, even though the Brazilian attacker is not an out-and-out striker.

It is the new interim manager, Guus Hiddink’s second spell at Old Trafford after doing a similar job from March 2009. But the Dutch manager has insisted he does not expect club owner Roman Abramovich to meddle in team selection.

However, Shakhtar wanted to keep a hold on Teixeira for the rest of their domestic season, which starts again in March after the winter break, but the Ukrainian side’s exit from Champions League has now opened the door for their high-value asset, who also has revealed he wants to play in England.

Chelsea have netted just 21 league goals this season, 16 fewer than league leaders Leicester, with last season’s top scorer Diego Costa scoring only four goals.

PSG and Juventus are also in the race to sign the Brazilian, but Chelsea are firm favourites to bring in the player who could join another former Shakhtar hotshot, Willian, at Stamford Bridge.

Last month, Teixeira revealed his desire to join Chelsea in an interview with Brazilian media outlet Lance, “What I saw and what my manager said was that Chelsea, Juventus and PSG made proposals,”

“I’m glad to have received the proposal of Chelsea as they are a big club in Europe, but my manager will sort that.
“It’s my dream, I have spoken to many people who have the desire to play in the Premier League, because I think it’s the best World Championship, most competitive.

“For January, I believe it is very difficult because it is in the middle of the championship. Shakhtar has said they will not release me in January, only at the end of the season. But I’m with a clear head.”
