Pique made his Spain debut during the 2-0 win over England on 6 February 2009. He made his tournament debut for Spain at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, starting in four of the team’s five matches. Spain finished the competition in third place. The Barcelona star started in all the seven games, as Spain won their first-ever FIFA World Cup by beating the Netherlands 1–0 in the final. Pique’s partnership with Puyol saw Spain concede only twice and keep four consecutive clean sheets in the knockout stage.

In 2012, Pique represented Spain to defend their UEFA Euro Cup title. Pique played every minute of Spain’s campaign while partnering Sergio Ramos in the centre of defence. He was one of three Spanish defenders included in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament, as the winners conceded only one goal in six matches. In the following year, he was a part of the Spain team that finished runners-up in the FIFA Confederations Cup. He also featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 UEFA Euro and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

On 11 August 2018, Piqué announced his retirement from international football. He now represents Catalonia in the international football spectrum and has been the subject of political abuse in his own country because of his anti-national jibes. He has also had a bad reputation in Spain because of his attacks on his former fellow Spanish centre-back and the skipper of the Spanish National Football Team, Sergio Ramos.

With Barcelona’s humiliating exit from the UEFA Champions League 2020 by FC Bayern Munich, Pique’s performance and his stint has been under fire in the Catalonian club. He is likely to exit the club this year and his selection in the next season will be a matter of huge concern for the entire FC Barcelona board.
