Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is arguably the greatest goalkeeper of his generation yet again failed to win Champions League title as the Old Lady lost to Real Madrid at Cardiff on Saturday.
The result meant the Italian legend has lost his third Champions League final with the club and it remains the only title that eluded him in his illustrious career. The 39-year old has joined Juventus in a world record deal at the start of 21st century and has never looked back in his career as he amassed a staggering 22 titles including FIFA World Cup in 2006.
Juventus were outplayed by Real Madrid in the second half as Los Blancos won 4-1 at the end scripting history by becoming the first club to win back to back European titles in Champions League era. Buffon, who will be 40 next season, is hopeful that he could win the title next season as he is planning to retire at the end of next season.
“As far as I am concerned, I have one last chance,” Buffon is quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. “I still have a year on my contract, we’re in the Champions League again so we will challenge to win it.”
Juventus were considered slight favorites going into the game at Cardiff as they have only let in three goals all through their campaign. However, the Italian champions failed to repel the relentless pressing by Real Madrid as they let four past Buffon in the most important game.
“It was a great chance for us and we had earned and deserved to have it,” he said.
“We only made the most of this chance for half an hour. After that, we were not up to scratch. I don’t know whether, in that first half an hour, we had excelled ourselves just to be on their level, but the fact is we are still lacking something; something which at least keeps you on the level of your opponents in a game like this.
“There are no regrets. They showed that they were better than us and they deserved to win, but certainly we could have done better.”
The loss meant Juventus has once again failed in the final of European final as they now hold a record seventh defeat in the finals. The Turin-based club has once again to failed to do a treble after winning Serie A and Coppa Italia as they once again finish with a domestic double.
