Manchester United manager is hopeful to have Matteo Darmian in his squad for next season amid interest from Italian giants Juventus and Inter Milan, according to reports.
Darmian’s tough time at Old Trafford
Darmian had failed to make an impact under Jose Mourinho last season as he struggled for life under the Portuguese manager. He managed only 29 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions which aggregated for only 2322 minutes of playing time.
In his two seasons at Manchester United, the Italian full back have made 68 appearances for the club during his time. He had flourished under Louis van Gaal in his traditional right back role but he was more useful for Jose Mourinho because of his versatility in his second season.
Injuries to Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo meant Darmian was used in various positions during the end of the last season. He had played as a left back during the injury crisis and had did a great job but Antonio Valencia is the first choice for Mourinho in his traditional and favored right back last season.
Mourinho looks him as a great squad player and his versatility has helped the club during the business end of last season as he was able to fill in various roes as per the club’s needs.
Transfer Possible?
According to ESPN, Darmian is viewed as an important player for the team by Jose Mourinho due to his versatility. However, interest from big clubs like Juventus and Inter Milan meant that the transfer is always a possibility.
Juventus are set to be without their right back Dani Alves as the Brazilian is set to make a move to Premier League club Manchester City in the coming days. They are also set to lose their left back Alex Sandro as the Brazilian is set for a big money move to either Chelsea or PSG before the end of summer.
Darmian would be an ideal replacement for the club who are looking for quality full backs. Inter Milan are also credited with an interest in the Italian defender.
The 27-year old might also force a move back to his homeland as he is in dire need of more regular playing time to make it to the 2018 World Cup.
