Liverpool firm favourite to sign Croatian star after Chelsea, Arsenal fail

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, who was also a potential target for both Arsenal and Chelsea in the winter transfer window but the player himself chose to stay at Inter.

The Croatia international surprised everyone with some spectacular displays at Euro 2016, and rightly captured Jurgen Klopp’s attention.

According to Chilean newspaper AS, Klopp is looking to seal the deal for Brozovic as early as possible and if the promising midfielder joins Liverpool it would be the German tactician’s fifth signing after Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic.

Brozovic is a difficult player to categorise. He is not an outright creative player, nor is he especially combative; he usually plays a box-to-box role but lacks the physicality or speed usually associated with it.

Indeed, he performs best as the adaptable third wheel in a midfield three in which the others take charge of the dedicated defensive (Arijan Ademi at Dinamo) and creative (Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric for Croatia) tasks.

Reports in the English press have dubbed Brozovic the “Croatian Xavi” — a moniker that somewhat overestimates his ability. Although he is neat and tidy in possession and does occasionally provide incision, he has not yet demonstrated Xavi’s ability to impose himself on a match and control the rhythm of play.

The Reds are also keeping tabs on Inter Milan enforcer Gary Medel, the same Chilean media outlet claims.

The Italian giants have made the 28-year-old available to finance Roberto Mancini’s spending spree and Anfield could be his next destination.

Medel played in every match as Chile won the Copa America recently and Klopp was in attendance to watch his bullish performances.

Meanwhile, Liverpool has agreed on a deal with Wigan for goalkeeper Adam Bogdan. The 28-year-old Hungarian was looked surplus to requirements after the arrival of Mainz stopper Karius.
