Barcelona could be set to miss out on their top midfielder transfer target as he prefers a move to the Bernabeu over the Camp Nou this summer

The Catalan giants have failed to lift the La Liga title for the first time under Luis Enrique in the previous season, which saw the manager quit the club at the end of the campaign.

They were quick to announce Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde as their new boss for the next season and the Spaniard has already started looking for top transfer targets to improve the squad next season.

Valverde is looking to add quality to many positions in the squad and has been linked with some of the best players in Europe for a move this summer.

One player constantly linked with a move to the Camp Nou is Italian midfielder Marco Verratti.

The PSG star is arguably the best player in his position at the moment in Europe but has not had a great season with the French giants.

They fell out of the UCL thanks to a remarkable turnaround by Barcelona and also failed to win the league, thanks to the heroics of AS Monaco in the domestic league.

And though this may have made up Verratti’s mind to quit France this summer, Barcelona are far from favourites to land him this summer.

According to reports from Spanish outlet Diario Gol, Verratti will prefer a move to Real Madrid, Barca’s local rivals, over a move to Catalonia if it comes to it this summer.

Zinedine Zidane is in the middle of achieving something remarkable at the Bernabeu next season and there are very few players who will turn down an opportunity to be a part of it next season.

And reports today suggest that the Italian midfielder believes that Zidane is the right man to work under and that he will prefer a move to the Spanish capital this summer.

Real have been linked with a move for the 24-year old but Barcelona want him as a long-term replacement for Andres Iniesta next season.

Verratti is more than capable of replacing Iniesta at the Camp Nou and could easily be tempted by this offer. Where do you think Verratti will play next season?
