Numbers Revealed: Manchester United Continue Their Crazy Spending Spree Post-Ferguson Era

Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world as far as revenue is considered but the Red Devils are not stopping for anyone in terms of spending money for key targets in recent seasons.

The club has once again hit the headlines after agreeing a massive 85million deal for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku on Friday.

Crazy Market

Manchester United are the second in spending transfer money this summer to AC Milan, who had so far spend 129m euros. The Red Devils managed to sign Swedish defender Victor Lindelof from Benfica last month for a reported £31million.

Jose Mourinho, however, is absolutely fine with the money spent by the club as he believes the market is crazy enough and the transfer fees could only go upwards in the coming years.

“Football and the market is crazy; an expensive signing now might be cheap in three years,” said Mourinho.

“Breaking records is not a reason to be sad, it shows the dimension that the club is in.”

Post Ferguson Era

Despite not being so successful over the past four seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager at Manchester United, the club are the biggest spender in entire Europe.

The Red Devils have spent an eye watering 733m euros for 21 different players in the five summers, including this year’s summer transfer window. This has made the club become the highest spender and the new TV deal in Premier League has helped the cause for Manchester United.

Sir Alex Ferguson was an icon at Old Trafford and had won an incredible 38 titles that included 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and five FA Cups during his 27 year stay at the club. During his time, the Scottish manager had spent only 790m euros in nearly three decades compared to the 733m euros since his departure.

Paul Pogba (105m euros), Romelu Lukaku (85m euros), Angel Di Maria (75m euros) and Anthony Martial (60m euros) are the biggest signings made in club’s history and all of them came in the recent seasons. Sir Alex’s successor David Moyes signed Juan Mata (45m euros) and Marouane Fellaini (32m euros) in his only season.

Louis van Gaal has signed Di Maria (75m euros), Luke Shaw (37.5m euros), Ander Herrera (36m euros), Marcos Rojo (20m euros), Daley Blind (17.5m euros) and Radamel Falcao (loaned) in 2014/15. The Dutch manager then signed the likes of Anthony Martial (60m euros), Morgan Schneiderlin (35m euros), Memphis Depay (34m), Matteo Darmian (18m euros) and Bastian Schweinsteiger (9m euros) in the following summer.

The Red Devils are linked with  James Rodriguez, Nemanja Matic and Inter’s Ivan Perisic and the spending would see the club eclipse the total spending made by Sir Alex during his tenure at the club.
