The German midfielder had started his youth career at Hertha Berlin before moving away to Tennis Borussia Berlin at the age of 14 in 2008. He then moved to Energie Cottbus after a three-year spell at his previous club.
After one year at Energie Cottbus, the midfielder had decided to join Freiburg’s youth team. The 18-year old has since grown with the Bundesliga side and made his first senior debut April 2014 after coming in on as a substitute against Stuttgart.
Philipp had been one of their star performers during their 2. Bundesliga season as he helped the club reach the top flight once again with 8 goals and 11 assists in 31 appearances. He went on to continue his impressive run in Bundesliga last season having scored 9 goals and managed 3 assists in only 25 league appearances.
Philipp said via a press release after joining Dortmund: “When BVB come knocking on your door, you cannot say no.
“I think that at the age of 23 years I’m mature and old enough take the next step. I want to develop as a player.”
Playing Style And New Marco Reus Tag
Philipp can play across all the positions in the front line as he can play on both the wings as well as a central striker. However, his most favourable position is the role of a secondary striker, in which he had thrived last season at Freiburg.
He is one of the best all-round attackers in the league and will be an interesting prospect for Borussia Dortmund to have. He is also compared to BVB forward Marco Reus as he has few similarities to the way he plays and propelled the fans to liken him to the German star.
