There has long been speculation about Lionel Messi’s future at PSG, after his former club FC Barcelona publicly expressed their strong desire to bring him back to Camp Nou. Moreover, after the Catalan club splashed a whopping €160 million on transfers this summer it was viewed as a statement that they can bring Leo back to Barcelona. However, PSG sporting director Luis Campos has revealed his plans about Messi’s future which could be set-back to the Catalans.
Messi signed a two-year deal at the Parisian club last summer, after he had to put an end to his stint with his beloved club Barcelona. While his current contract expires at the end of this season, there’s an option of extending it by another 12 months. The clause can reportedly be triggered by the Argentine himself, and not the club. But Campos has now confessed that they are trying to lockdown the GOAT to a new deal.
Campos wants Lionel Messi to stay with him at PSG for another three years
Luis Campos was appointed as their Sporting Director by PSG this summer, following his impressive stint with Lille in a similar role. The Portuguese is now rested with the responsibility of handling off-the-field issues of a dressing room which consists of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Sergio Ramos. While the superstar Mbappe has been extended at the club by another three-years, Campos now wants Messi to follow in the youngster’s footsteps.
In a recent interview, Campos has confessed that he wants the Argentina captain to stay at Parc des Princes for another three-years, that is until his own contract expires with the club. Campos has penned a three-year deal at PSG and wants to keep Messi with as long as possible. While speaking on RMC about the futures of both Messi and his close friend Neymar, he said:
“Neymar is a very good player. He arrives on time all the time, he hasn’t missed a training session, except one for a small injury. Neymar is involved in the team and club project. I asked [Lionel] Messi if he wanted to stay and I told him that I hope that he will stay here during my tenure here [3 years]. I’m very satisfied with Leo.”
Meanwhile, Messi has started the new season with a bang netting 4 goals and providing 8 assists in just 9 games so far. And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano Lionel Messi isn’t going to make any decision on his future yet. The Copa America winning captain with Argentina first wants to focus on the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which also could be his last ever shot at lifting the coveted trophy. He will then sit and study the option he will have on the table before the summer of 2023.
Meanwhile, Campos has the ability to pull-off such tough jobs given the record his boasts. The Portuguese made his name at AS Monaco after facilitating the transfers of some elite players like Fabinho, Bernardo Silva, Thomas Lemar, Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez, Anthony Martial among many other.
The 58-year-old oversaw a major change at the Parisian club this summer after they sacked their former coach Mauricio Pochettino. Campos, who had appointed Christophe Galtier as Lille manager back in 2017, brought him to PSG along with him. He further signed some serious talent in Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Carlos Soler, Hugo Ekitike, Nordi Mukiele and Renato Sanches.
