Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo was in spectacular form for the club during the final months of last season. His incredible performances meant the Los Blancos won their 12th European title and also the coveted La Liga for the first time in 12 months.
But the Portuguese skipper is keen to take that form going into next season. He is fit and healthy this time around unlike last year when he was nursing a knee injury and could not feature till late August. According to Marca, the 32-year old’s objective is to play well in the initial months to win the most prestigious Ballon d’Or next January.
Ronaldo is considered favorite to win the prize as he had so much success with both the national team as well as Real Madrid since the start of the season. He has guided Portugal to third place finish in Confederations Cup apart from the club success he had this year.
Barcelona defender Gerard Pique had also admitted that Cristiano could be the favorite for the honor ahead of his teammate Lionel Messi. The Argentine also had one of the best seasons of his career individually as he scored 37 La Liga goals.
Meanwhile, Cristiano is keen to play well in the year end FIFA Club World Cup, where club champions from all the confederations play against each other to win the title. It was in this tournament last season that Ronaldo’s impressive three goals handed Real Madrid the trophy in Japan. He was also named the player of the tournament last year.
He plans to stay in shape for the tournament but Zidane would also ensure that Ronaldo gets enough rest. It is believed Ronaldo could be rested during the break between the Champions League group stages and initial knockout rounds Copa del Rey on either side of the tournament.
The 32-year old is ready to sit out for few games to ensure that he remains in the best shape possible and the man management of Zidane had really played part in Real’s success last season. If Ronaldo stays fit and fresh for the knockout stages of Champions League then it could very well be another European title for the club next season.
