It was yet another impressive display for the Saints who have now conceded only 9 goals in this league campaign. Only Roma have a better defensive record in the league all over Europe than that of Southampton.
It was a completely dominating display by the Southampton side from start to finish and they never really seemed like losing this game. They dominated the initial phase of the match with Fulham hardly even getting any touch onto the ball. It was a delightful header from Ricky Lambert which gave Soton a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when headed in at the far post after Dejan Lovren flicked on James Ward-Prowse’s corner from the right.
They continued to dominate the first half and got their 2nd goal in the dying moments of the first half through Jay Rodriguez. Lallana sent a diagnonal cross in towards Lambert at the back post. He headed it across goal for Rodridguez to be the man to head home at the back post. 2-0 at half time.
The 2nd half didn’t turn Fulham’s fortunes much either and it was Southampton all throughout the match. Fulham never looked like troubling the Southampton defense even though manager Martin Jol did try to add attacking flair with the addition of Rodallega in place of Darren Bent who looked equally clueless up front with Berbatov.
It was a very thoroughly professional display by Soton which sees them climb upto 3rd place in the league table with 18 points just 4 points behind league leaders. And for Fulham they occupy the 14th spot in the table with 10 points from their 9 matches played till now.
