Cristiano Ronaldo is a free agent now, and that is more than weird to hear. The 37-year-old forward had his contract with Manchester United terminated with mutual agreement, after his tirade against the club and its manager Erik ten Hag in a recent interview with Piers Morgan. Ronaldo came down heavily on the club’s owner as well, and after his 90-minute rant, all bridges were burnt between him and United.

And just before Portugal’s FIFA World Cup campaign kicked off, Ronaldo became a free agent, reportedly being chased by many. Nonetheless, the Portuguese captain was unfazed by all the controversy and rumors and inspired his nation to a win in the World Cup opener against Ghana by scoring the opening goal in a narrow 3-2 win.

However, the result could have been a disappointing one for the Portugal team had Ghana scored from a bizarre error from Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa. A stunned Ronaldo skipped his heartbeat and have a blunt reaction as his former teammate and now a pundit, Ro Keane responded hilariously to it.

Keane pokes fun at Newcastle with Cristiano Ronaldo reaction jibe

As soon as Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United announced the contract termination, a lot of potential suitors have lined up at the doors of the lethal forward. While he also pursued a move out in the summer, Ronaldo was unable to find himself a new club.

The likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Napoli, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, and Sporting CP all had registered their interest, only to back out later. This time, a new name has emerged in Newcastle United, who are exploring a possible deal.

The Magpies are on a surge under Eddie Howe, who has them sitting third in the Premier League table. Howe has only completed a year in charge at Newcastle his month and has already accomplished a complete turnaround. The club was in a relegation fight when Howe took over in November last year, who steered them to an 11th-place finish in the league.

The 44-year-old has already been equipped with a number of solid signings in Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, and Kieran Trippier amongst others, and the club’s Saudi owners are now planning to bring in free agent Ronaldo.

However, Roy Keane was utterly bemused after hearing the Newcastle links to Cristiano Ronaldo. Keane, who played alongside the Portugal captain at United has backed him all the way throughout this fuss. He was on punditry duties when Ronaldo’s Portugal escaped with a narrow win over Ghana.

Despite the Portuguese taking a two-goal lead, Ghana responded with an Osman Bukari strike in the 89th minute to cut and make the dying minutes of the game breathtaking.

And it was Portugal’s keeper Costa who almost gifted them an equalizer when he dropped the ball on the pitch for a goal-kick, unaware that Ghana’s Inaki Williams was just behind him. The Athletic Bilbao player managed to steal the ball but slipped while firing the shot which was stopped by Ruben Dias.

Ronaldo, who was earlier substituted and watched from the bench couldn’t believe what had happened and reacted in the most shocking way. Keane in his post-match analysis dubbed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s reaction as the one to Newcastle links, as he said on ITV Sport:

“Look at Ronaldo’s face, my goodness. Honestly, he’s just had a call Newcastle are in for him.”

That certainly made his fellow pundits burst into laughter, as Cristiano Ronaldo too was relieved that the loose shot from Williams didn’t go in. A win to start his last-ever World Cup finals would have pleased Ronaldo after all that had happened in the last week. However, there was not a shortage of panic attacks for the former Real Madrid star.

Although Ronaldo will only sort his future out after the World Cup, Newcastle, backed by their Saudi owners who are the richest ones in the business, have reportedly set a plan in motion to convince the free agent to join them. The record international goalscorer’s wages won’t be a problem for the Magpies, but his urge to play in the Champions League could well rule out any possibility.

However, Ronaldo may have taken note of the work done by Howe at St. James’ Park which is well ahead of United’s project. But the winter will only tell, where next for the five-time Champions League winner.
