Southampton looks to keep pace with big boys when they host Hull City

The Saints remarkable start has continued with their 1-1 draw at Stoke City. A win would have taken them up as far as second in the table, but for a shocking goal by Asmir Begovic. With the draw Southampton are in sixth, level on points with both Everton and Manchester City with 19.

Hull City have also started out this season quite well. Their 14 points is enough to put them in tenth place in the table. Hull’s season has been rather up and down, but they have been able to string together several results.

What to expect from the Match

Despite conceding at Stoke last weekend, Southampton still boast the best defensive record in the Premier League having conceded just the 4 goals this season. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be demanding his players to maintain this solidity against a Hull side that have traveled poorly this term. They haven’t been too bad on offensive either having scored 11. They have scored at least one goal in each of their last six matches.

Southampton picked up a deserved point in the 1-1 draw with Stoke City last time out, although it could easily have been 3 had it not been for Asmir Begovic’s freak goal in the opening exchanges. Manager Mauricio Pochettino will be without Guly for the welcome of Hull, while summer arrival Pablo Osvaldo is a doubt with a nerve problem. Despite conceding against Stoke, Artur Boruc is expected to keep his place in goal with Pochettino set to name an unchanged XI.

The Tigers have won just 1 of their 5 away games this season and conceded 9 of their 10 league goals on the road and while Steve Bruce will challenge his Hull side to break this hoodoo away, they’ll struggle against the resolute Southampton defence. They have managed to keep a respectable four clean sheets, but have scored more than one goal in a match just once, in their 3-2 win over Newcastle. They really should have done better against 9 man Sunderland last weekend. This was a match in which they had 25 shots, but managed to get only two of those on target, with 86% possession.

A solid 1-0 win over Sunderland last time out means Hull City’s impressive defensive record at the KC Stadium continuous this season, where they’ve conceded just once in 5 league games. Manager Steve Bruce is expected to be without the services of Allan McGregor, James Chester and Sone Aluko, while defender Alex Bruce is doubtful as he recovers from a groin strain. With that, Bruce may name an unchanged XI from last weekend for the trip to Southampton.

Players to watch out for

Adam Lallana (Southampton): The youngster has done his World Cup chances no harm whatsoever with excellent performances this season, and has been the creative force behind much of the offensive output of the Saints. He will be a real handful for the Hull defense with his accurate set-piece delivery and late runs into the box.

Tom Huddlestone (Hull City): The former Tottenham man has been a crucial member of Hull’s midfield. His ability to mop up play and spray long raking balls will be a threat to a Southampton side that look good for a respectable mid-table finish.

Predicted Starting line ups

Saints have won 4 of their previous 5 league meetings against Hull and they’ll be expected to pick up maximum points at the St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.
