Swansea City exploits fragile Fulham beat 2-1

West Bromwich Albion v Swansea City - Premier League

Swansea City overcame Fulham 2-1 in their Premier League match this afternoon to add more misery on Martin Jol’s side.

The home side started better of the two early on, and Dimitar Berbatov attempted a bicycle kick but it flew straight into Michel Vorm’s arms.

Visitors then failed to make their spell of pressure count in the opening 10 minutes, with their best chance being a corner that was cleared and a Jonathan De Guzman free kick that Fulham backline cofortably dealt with.

Then as the half went on Pajtim Kasami claimed for a penalty after Fulham stole the ball from their opponents, and then Roland Lamah raided down the wing for the away side as the match swung from end to end.

On 25 minutes Swansea were inches away from taking the lead. Lamah ran down the left and cut inside before firing a shot that took a deflection and went just wide.

It was then Fulham’s turn to go close when Darren Bent directed a header wide after Scott Parker had found the striker at the back post.

Bent again came even closer minutes later, this time hitting the post with a half-volley after being left unmarked in the middle and was understably disappointed with his effort.

Swansea, though, did had two good chances to take the lead just before half time, first through Nathan Dyer, who saw his shot saved, and then Wilfried Bony, who headed over the bar as half came to a close.

After the break Swansea found their breakthrough in the 56th minute, and it was a gift. Aron Hughes made a mess off a cross that came in from the right flank, and deflected the ball into his own goal. The ball simply striked him and inexplicably bounced off him into the goal.

Scott Parker then pulled one back for Fulham just eight minutes later which leveled things at 1-1. His goal was either a piece of genius or the luckiest of the season, though Parker will certainly say the former. He attempted a chip shot, but messed it up and as a result ball floated over the head of Michel Vorm and dropped perfectly into the top corner at the far post.

Even if the goal was more skill than luck, but the next Swansea goal on 80 minutes, which eventually proved to be a winner, was well-deserved in the end. Shelvey was his team’s hero on the night, scoring with a well placed shot over the hand of Stekelenburg from the top of the box. The victory takes Swansea to 10th position while pressure on Martin Jol increases further as Fulham find themselves in relegation zone on 18th place.
