UEFA Champions League: Group A: Match report – Shakhtar were held to a draw by Manchester United, Leverkusen edge out Real Sociedad

Manchester United hung on for a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League Group A match at the Donbass Arena on Wednesday night.

In an evenly matched first-half Shakhtar and United both had plenty of midfield possession but found it difficult to get in behind each other. Dutch striker Robin van Persie managed to break the offside trap on one occasion but his left foot curling shot went over the bar.

United, though, took the lead on 18 minutes after Shakhtar failed to clear Marouane Fellaini’s low ball from the right. Danny Welbeck pounced and put the ball into the net.

Shakhtar did enjoy plenty of possession in the second-half but were unable to find a way through. The best chance of the half fell to van Persie who collected the ball on the edge of the box, wriggled some space before seeing his shot blocked.

Shakhtar then drew level and deservedly so with quarter of an hour to go when Brazilian Taison took advantage of poor defensive clearance from Untied to blast the ball past David de Gea. The goal gave Shakhtar the impetus and they flooded forward at every opportunity in search of a winner. However, United hung on for a vital point.

In an interesting turn of event, Ryan Giggs came on as a half time substitute for United to break Raul’s record and make his 145th appearance in the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen's Simon Rolfes

In Germany, Jens Hegeler scored with a free kick in the second minute of injury time to give Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the Champions League match on Wednesday.

Simon Rolfes scored for Leverkusen in injury time of the first half. Carlos Vela equalized in the 51st, knocking in the rebound after his penalty had been parried by Leverkusen’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The victory has revived Leverkusen’s campaign after its opening 4-2 loss at Manchester United.
