“World Taekwondo Grandprix 2013, Manchester is going to be a tough competition.” Says, Martin Stamper

“World Taekwondo Grandprix 2013, Manchester is going to be a tough competition.” Says, Martin Stamper, the Liverpool based British Taekwondo athlete. Martin was a bronze medallist at the 2011 World Taekwondo Championships and also reached the semi finals of the 2012 London Olympics. Here are the excerpts from the interview with Martin-

Sportzwiki- Thank you for taking out time for the interview Martin. We appreciate it!

Martin Stamper- No problem. My pleasure!

Sportzwiki- What is Taekwondo for You?

Martin Stamper- It’s basically my life. I have been doing taekwondo for 21 years and I hope when I retire from competing I can become a coach in the sport.

Sportzwiki- Martin, tell us something about your Taekwondo journey so far.

Martin Stamper- It’s been up and down but the best years of my career have been the last 3 years and I hope I can continue that until Rio 2016.

Sportzwiki- What are the skills required to be a good Taekwondo player?

Martin Stamper- I would say Speed, leg control, good reactions and you need to be smart.

Sportzwiki- How is your preparation for the World Taekwondo Grandprix 2013?

Martin Stamper- I had been struggling a little with a knee injury for most of the year. After the worlds, I had an operation to get that sorted. I have been back full training for two weeks and I’m feeling really good. I am competing in Serbia next weekend as a warm up for the Grand Prix. So, I’ll hopefully get some confidence from there and take it in to the Grand Prix.

Sportzwiki- What do you have to say to those participating in the GrandPrix? And, how do you see this event?

Martin Stamper- It’s going to be tough. It’s the top 32 players in the world. So, it’s basically the best of the best. The event is going to be great with around 3-4 thousand spectators in Manchester. If it comes close to the atmosphere at the excel in London, it’s gonna be amazing.

Sportzwiki- What do you do when you are not doing Taekwondo?

Martin Stamper- Spending time with my family and friends, especially my daughter who’s 3 years old. She is so funny. I love her to bits. Also, I teach a lot of seminars up and down the country and have just started Martin Stamper’s Development Workshops. I am hoping to attract talented youngsters to come and train with me at the GB academy in Manchester for the day.

Sportzwiki- How tough it is to find sponsors in Taekwondo?

Martin Stamper- It is very tough especially trying to get a sponsor of a big company. I have been trying for years. I am lucky to have a few including ‘Drunknmunky’ and ‘Watertogo’ who are sponsoring my workshops. I am always looking for sponsorship to help my road to Rio 2016 just that little bit easier.

Sportzwiki- And, what message would you like to give to the young athletes who are practicing Taekwondo?

Martin Stamper- If you have a passion for taekwondo then put in the hard work and dedication and you will get the rewards.

Sportzwiki- Well that’s all we had for you Martin. All the best to You for the World Taekwondo Grandprix 2013, Manchester and for Rio 2016. Have a great time!

Martin Stamper- Thank You. Cheers!
