Asian Champions Trophy 2016: India beat Pakistan in a high scoring thriller!
India beat Pakistan by 3-2 in their third group match of the Asian Champions Trophy played at Kuantan. Despite trailing, the Indian team showed character and scored 2 goals in quick succession to put India on the front foot and won the match.
Starting briskly Pakistan earned a penalty corner in the first minute of the game as a pass from outside the D touched the leg of an Indian fielder. The penalty shot was defended by a player, to be stopped and reshot taken by Pakistan player. This time goalkeeper Sreejesh saved the goal. In the 11th minute, a reverse flick went by Talwinder went over the goal post.
In the 5th minute of second quarter another attempt by Pakistan forward was also saved by Sreejesh. In the very next minute Pradeep more scored a field goal for India entering the D from right with a powerful hit that skipped through the defense of the Pakistan goalkeeper. The tenth minute of the second quarter was again testing time for India as 2-3 fielders saved a good effort by Pakistan. In the 11th minute, a Pakistan player was shown green card and they played with 10 players for 2 minutes. The first half ended at 1-0 in favor of India.
The third quarter started With Pakistan dominating and scoring a field goal in the first minute by Rizwan taking the score to 1-1. The fourth minute was eventful as both teams made a valiant effort to score a field goal but failed. Indian circle entries (10) were mainly (5) from right in the 9th minute Pakistan entered from left And gave a pass to Md. Irfan who scored the second goal taking the lead. A review in the 13th minute got India a penalty corner as the hit touched the foot of a Pakistan defender in the D. India’s Rupinder Pal converted the Penalty into a goal equalizing the score 2-2. Within the next minute, a beautiful pass from right diverted by Talvinder was converted into a goal by Ramandeep to take the lead of 3-2. By this time India had made 15 circle entries as compared to 10 of Pakistan. They also converted the lone penalty into goal whereas Pakistan had no penalty earned
The last quarter was a see- saw the battle as India got a chance in the first minute but was well saved by the Pakistan goalkeeper. In the 8th minute, Pakistan forward player hit a shot was well saved by P Srjeesh. In the 13th minute, Indian forward hit a shot but was well saved by Pakistan goalkeeper. The Indian team played good attacking hockey and never allowed Pakistan a chance to score an equalizer.
With this India goes on the top of the points table and they will play China on 25th October.
