Champions Trophy 2014: India Stuns Belgium to enter Semi-finals
India defeated another higher ranked side Belgium 4-2 in quarter finals of the Champions Trophy 2014 hockey tournament at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvneshwar earlier today. It was another excellent show by the Indians as they defeated the number 2 ranked side Holland in last group match on the 9th. This has been a great tournament for the team as they lost the first 2 league matches and then winning the next 2. It was a huge crowd that enjoyed the game played by both the teams and India emerging as winners.
India began as underdogs but on a positive note though they missed the first chance scoring a goal of the match in 2.50 minutes. Then Belgium earned two penalty corners in succession but was wasted. In 8.30 minutes India tried another goal but in vain. In 11.10 Belgium earned a penalty corner and converted into goal. It gave Belgium a 1-0 lead.
In the second quarter Belgium began on a right note when Dockier converted a field goal in 2.38 minutes to give visitors a 2-0 lead. The crowd was disappointed and saw no good future for the Indian team. Miraculously the hosts earned a penalty corner in 2.50 minutes and Rupinder flicked the corner into the goal to reduce the margin to 2-1 raising the hopes of equalizing. In 4.25 minutes India missed a chance again. In 5.59 minutes a solo effort from the Belgium striker was well saved by Indian goalkeeper India missed 2 more chances in 6.35 and 10.12 minutes of this quarter. India then scored a beautiful field goal when Rupinder struck the ball from outside the “D” and then Uthappa flicked into the goal to equalize the score at 2-2. The crowd and the players were jubilant. In the 13 minute one more Belgium shot was well saved by Indian goalkeeper. Before the quarter ended Belgium striker’s shot went just wide off goal. At the end of 2nd quarter both teams were tied at 2-2.
In the 3rd quarter India put the pressure on the Belgium goalkeeper in 2nd minute itself. Then Belgium played some aggressive hockey but did not make use of the chances in 3rd and 8th minute respectively. In 9.54 minutes India missed an opportunity as Belgium goalkeeper made an excellent save. In 10.25 minutes India tried another goal but was well wide of the goalkeeper. India took the lead in 10.36 minutes when Akashdeep just tapped the ball into an open goal to make it 3-2. In the last 40 sec India missed another chance.
In the 4th quarter Belgium began aggressively but was not able to convert the chance into goal in the 3rd minute. Belgium earned a penalty corner in 3 .29 minutes but could not convert. After that Belgium earned another penalty corner , that was not only saved but was quickly taken into Belgium half by Nikkin who passed it to Sardar Singh in the ‘D’ and finally Dharamvir flicked that into a goal in 4.51 minutes to give India a 4-2 lead. After that Belgium earned a penalty corner in 8.02 minutes but the shot was well defended. Anxious moments were seen as Rupinder was out for 5 minutes due to a yellow card, but fortunately it had no bad consequence. At the end of the match it was 4-2 in favour of India.
India will play arch rivals Pakistan in the semi finals on Saturday and hope that India can improve their fantastic form to enter finals.
