Hockey World League Finals: India beat Great Britain to enter semifinals
India beat higher ranked Great Britan team in the 3rd quarterfinals of the World Hockey League finals at the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Stadium, Raipur just a few moments ago. It was an exceptional performance by the Indian team who looked a different team altogether despite England coming back in the final quarter.
In the first India began off to a positive start with a shot but it was not intercepted by Ramandeep. In the 5th minute, Great Britain entered into the “D” but was well defended by Rupinder Pal Singh. In the 8th minute, India got a chance as Talwinder was not able to intercept the ball. In the 10th minute, England earned the first penalty corner but it was well saved by P Sreejesh. In the 12th minute, England tried another shot but was again well saved by P Sreejesh. At the end of first quarter, the scores were level at 0-0.
In the 2nd quarter, India earned their first penalty corner in the 4th minute and Raghunath drag flicked the shot into a goal to give India a 1-0 lead. In the 5th minute Great Britain attacked but it was well saved by P Sreejsh. In the 7th minute, England attacked once more but it was well saved by P Sreejesh as Raghunath boot makes a contact with the back of his head. In the 9th minute, Ramandeep gave a weak pass instead of going it alone. Great Britain attacked more but was not able to go past Sreejesh. At the end of the second quarter, India led 1-0.
In the 3rd quarter, Great Britain began off to a positive start as David Condom hit a shot was well saved by P Sreejesh. India got 2 chances in the next few minutes but was not able to convert chances into goals. In the 9th minute a beautiful scoop pass to Talwinder and shot into a goal to give India 2-0 lead. In the 11th minute, Great Britain earned a penalty corner but the ball goes high as Great Britain asked a review but it went in favor of India. The next second India missed a chance of scoring a goal as the Great Britain defense was up to the mark. In the 12th minute a solo run by Akashdeep was well saved by Great Britain goalkeeper. In the 13th minute Great Britain earned a penalty corner but the person on the side deflected wide off the goalpost. At the end of third quarter India led 2-0.
In the 4th quarter, Great Britain attacked right from the 1st minute. In the 7th minute, Great Britain earned a penalty corner and shot was hit as Mantell deflected the shot into a goal to reduce the gap to 1-2. In the 10th minute, Aamir Khan made a great move as he hit a reverse flick but was well saved by Great Britain goalkeeper. The next second Great Britain made an excellent move, but it was well saved by P Sreejesh. In the 14th minute, Great Britain earned a penalty corner but was reviewed by India but the decision stood as penalty corner. The next penalty corner was not well trapped by the drag flicker. At the end of 4th quarter, India won the match by 2-1.
They will face the winner of Belgium and Argentina in the semi-finals on 5th.
