Following four medals tally to their kitty on the penultimate day, London Olympics Silver medalist Vijay Kumar shot two more medals on the final day of the 13th Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait City to take India’s final tally to 44 including 17 Gold, 14 Silver and 13 Bronze.
Vijay won the Bronze in the 25M Center Fire Pistol event and also teamed up with veteran Samaresh Jung and Pemba Tamang to bag the Team Silver in the event.
25M Center Fire Pistol Men: Vijay Kumar won a Bronze after losing to Thailand’s Pongpol Kuchairatanna in a shoot-off for Silver and Bronze. Both Vijay and Pongpol had shot 584. Korea’s Dae Kyu Jang won the Gold shooting a score of 585.
25m Centre Fire Pistol Men’s Team event:
Vijay Kumar, Pemba Tamang and Samaresh Jung won the Team Silver with a score of 1736. The Korean team won the Gold with a total score of 1738, while Vietnam bagged the Bronze with a score of 1731.
Despite repeated notices from the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF), about the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revoking the Olympic quota places from the championship owing to Kuwait Olympic Association being suspended for government interference, the organizers listed the Olympic quota winners.
It included six Indians — Pooja Ghatkar, Heena Sidhu, Lajja Gauswami, Sanjeet Rajput, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Neeraj Kumar — in the list displayed on the official website Kuwait Shooting Federation.
The ISSF has stated that an additional, Asian Olympic quota championship would be organized in due course of time, to distribute the 35 Olympic quota places for the continent, for the Rio Olympics.
