Mahesh and Joshna entered semifinals of Victoria Open Squash tournament in Melbourne Australia and The Junior Girls team won the first match against Finland in Eindhoven in the World Junior Squash Championship yesterday the 31 July 2015.
Mahesh Mangoankar defeated Jayme Haycocks in four sets. Mahesh, third seed, started shakily loosing first set at 13-15 but soon came back with vengeance to take the set at 12-10. He improved further in the next two games to win by better margin of 11-8 and 11-7. He will play top seed Ryan Cuskelly next. Another Indian male player Kushkumar failed to win the first round.
In women’s section Joshna Chinappa beat Megan Craig also in four sets. She won her first two sets easily at 11-6 and 11-4. But Craig pulled a surprise by winning the third set at 11-8. Joshna gathered herself and won the fourth set at 11-9.
Indian girl’s team won their first match against Finland on 31 July on the first day of the team events of the junior world squash championship at Eindhoven in Netherlands in a pool B match. Seeded seventh they play next USA, Australia. All three had easy victories. Adya Adwani won her match 11-7, 11-7 11-7. Harshit Jawanda her match much easily at 11-1, 11-5, 11-4 while Akaknksha Salunke won her match 11-1, 11-8,11-5. India meets Australia today at 1230 local time. Indian girl’s team best performance had been earning a fourth position in 2013 and third in 2009.
In single the juniors performance did not go beyond winning second round as V. Senthilkumar in boys’ section and Harshita in girls’ section were defeated in their third round. All other Indian contender had lost in second (Aishwary Singh, Vikas Mehra, Adithya Raghavan, Sandeep Ramachandran, Sunayan Kuruvilla,Jui Kalgutkar,Adya Adwani, Nikita Joshi, and Akaknksha Salunke) round of the tournament.
Joshna was the runner up in 2005 the best performance by an Indian in individual competition.
