In the recently concluded Asian games 2014 in Incheon, South Korea there was some standout performances which was praiseworthy. India won 11 gold medals, 3 less than what they achieved in Gughazou, China in 2010. On the first day of the Asian 2014 the ace shooter Jitu Rai won Inda’s first gold medal for India which shows that this young boy has a bright future and can be a medal prospect for India in Rio Olympics 2016. He beat the Chinese opponenet which is not an easy task.
An inspiring performance came from the men’s archery team which did expectional well to win the gold in men’s compound event which was included in Asian games 2014. The team of Sandeep, Rajat Chauhan and Abhishek Verma performed consisently. In the final they beat the home team South Korea. Beating South Korea at their home turf is not an easy task and this win auger well for Indian trio. Apart from this men’s squash team won the gold medal. This win by Indian men’s squash win proves that India has the ability to perform well at the highest level and do the country proud.
In Wrestling Yogeshwar Dutt was the star winning it’s first gold medal after 28 years. He won the gold medal in the Commonwealth medal at Glasgow. His opponents were really tough and had to come back from behind till the semi-finals. In the final he beat Tajakastahn opponent by 1-0. His grit and determination shows the will to succeed at the highest level. He is the bronze medalist in London Olympics 2012.
The ace boxer Mary Kom won the gold medal in the 48-51 KG category. Winning gold medal in Asian games is never an easy task. She showed her class by defeating every boxer that she fought. She is the bronze medalist in the London Olympics 2012. Her boxing style was aggressive.
The best part of the Asian games was when India defeated Pakistan in the penalty shootouts at the finals. They won the gold medal in Asian games after 16 years and have booked a direct entry into the Rio Olympics. The hero of final was Srejeesh the goalkeeper who saved 2 penalites that made the work of Indians much easier. India now can prepare very well for the Olympics. This win will act as boost for Indian hockey in general.
In Kabaddi, the men’s team won its 7th gold medal since it’s inception in Asian games. The Indians were given a tough fight in finals by Iran. The Indian team trailed at end of first half 13-21 but in the 2nd half India showed why they are the champions. The match proved to be a nail-biter which went right down to wire. It was 24-24 and in the last 2 minutes they grabbed the victory by 27-25. In the women’s section India beat Iran 31-21 to win their second consecutive title.
In Athletics, women’s 4×400 team won 4th consecutive medal in Asian games. They broke the Asian games record which is a great achievement. This proves that India were the best in this event.
The surprising part was Saina Mirza and Saketh Mireyni winning the gold in mixed doubles event. It was a brilliant performance by the Indian pair.
Seema Punia won the gold in discuss throw event. So overall it was a mixed bag performance for the Indian team and hope that India can get more gold medals in Asian games 2018.
