Satnam Singh Bhamara, the new sensation in Indian basketball from Ballo ke village Haryana, wants to establish his existence in the NBA League. The 19-year-old basketball prodigy has been chosen by Dallas Mavericks in the NBA draft, held on 25th June 2015. And in his first return to India in the late night of 6th August, after 46 days the draft concluded, Satnam Singh has received an overwhelming response from the people of Punjab in last three days. He had to roam around almost 800 kilometers by car in last three days, travelling from New Delhi to Ludhana and from there to visit Amritsar, Hanumangarh, Patiala and Jalandhar. Each city had prepared felicitation programme for Satnam in a majestic manner for his tremendous achievement.
But Satnam, while speaking on the occasion from his Ballo ke village over phone on Monday, said, “I should not think at all that I have earned an achievement by getting into the NBA draft. Rather, I am in a continuous thought that I have just started my journey. And I will have to stay in this League for long. Otherwise I will be forgotten. My focus is to play in the NBA League at least for five years.” It is fact that Dallas Mavericks has signed a six-month agreement with Satnam.
He has participated in three matches with Dallas in the NBA Summer League so far. And he informed, his performance level in those three matches were not superior as well as not bad also. Satnam added, “The management of each franchise evaluates the performance of their players after every match. And as they want to win every match, there is no room for the players to get relaxed. You have to be on toes every moment.” Satnam who is supposed to stay in India for six more days also seems thrilled to get an opportunity to play with legendary NBA players Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. He informed, “There are matches where the former NBA legends take part. And this year, I am also likely to take part in that match where Jordan and Bryant will be participating. It is a dream for me that will come true for me. Since childhood I have been nurturing a desire to take their autographs, to have pictures with them. When I started learning basketball in Ludhiana Basketball Academy (LBA), I used to listen about Bryant and Jordan. I used to go through newspaper cuttings on their news and preserve it. Even, I had seen clippings of their matches in television whenever I went to the house of SAI coach late Shankar Subhramanium sir. He was the man who inspired me all the time to dream of participating in NBA.”
Satnam, along with his career, wants also to contribute to his village as well as to the basketball in Punjab. He stated, “I want to support financially to the school of my village where I have watched a lot of students who are enthusiastic towards basketball. And the school management also wants to build up infrastructure. I also had talks with Punjab Basketball Association officials regarding the development of the game in the state. I have assured them of any kind of support from my part if they require. It would be fulfillment of my dream if in future any player from India, following my footsteps, can be selected in the NBA draft.”
