In a morale boosting action sports ministry of India on Thursday has cleared an additonal list of 39 athletes to be included in its target olympic podium scheme for 2016 Rio Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This should infuse among the youth of India to make sports as alterantive choice of profession. This is a great step by the sports ministry of Govt. of India to encoyrage Indian atheltes to prepare for the events.
The upgraded TOPS list includes 16 from archery, two from boxing and one each from shooting and swimming each. Priyanka Panwar,Ashwini Akkunji, Janua Murmu, Sini Jose and Mandeep Kaur who were suspended due to doping offences between June 2011 and 2013 have been named among the probables for the womens 4X400M Relay race among 19 picked for athletics.
In shooting Chain Singh is the lone beneficiery of the scheme. The juniors in 4 x 400 m women relay team for 2020 olympics included are Chavi Sharawat, Anju Thomas, Nirmala and Arpita.M. In race walk 4 are included in the scheme are K A Ganpathi, Manish Rawat, Sandip Kumar and Devnedra Singh. Navjeet Kaur Dhillon is propsective candidate for discuss throw in 2020 olympics development group. Similalry Inderajeet singh for shot put, a contingent of 16 archers for archery 16 have been included and 3 junior boys and 2 junior girls are also included for developing for 2020 olympics .
Earlier the ministry had named 45 athletes in the scheme. Adding 39 more atheltes would do a wonder for Indian sports. However looking at the size of the country the numbers are not sufficient. The Govt. of India and the state Governments should do more efforts to help the Indian sportspersons to get more medals at the olympics.
