Manchester United have already splashed more than 100 million in the current transfer market but the Portuguese tactician still feels he needs a defensive midfielder going into the new season.
Two of the biggest targets apparently favorites to sign for the Red Devils are Nemanja Matic and Eric Dier. But this begs a question over which player the club should sign in the summer. Both the players are making their strides in Premier League over the past couple of years.
Matic safe bet than Dier
Considering the qualities, Nemanja Matic is a far more finished product and is in his prime at the moment with Chelsea. On the other hand, Eric Dier is a work in progress as he still continues to improve on his game to become a well rounded central midfielder.
The Serbian international has lots of experience in the Premier League as he played an impressive role at Chelsea winning two league titles in just three seasons. Matic provides the stability at the back just like Michael Carrick at the back which frees up Paul Pogba.
But Dier Should Be One United Should Sign
Tottenham are arguably the best team in their playing style over the past two seasons but the majority of the credit should go to Eric Dier who almost played every game in Premier League over the past couple of seasons.
The versatility of Dier had helped Mauricio Pochettino to change the formations at will around him as he has the ability to control the game with his immense passing range.
Despite his possession based game, he also has an excellent defensive tricks to shield the defense and help his club. This remains as the major positive for Manchester United, who looked awful while defending last season. The addition of Dier would mean they could have an absolute midfielder who possess all round skills.
This would even allow Pogba to play more freely in the attacking areas as Dier played a huge role in covering up for defense at Tottenham as they often go full attack over the course of the game. Matic would be a great addition to Manchester United but Dier could be better if they sign him this summer.
