Manchester United Turn Attention To Chelsea's Nemanja Matic After Dropping Interest In Fabinho 1

Jose Mourinho spent close to £150m on his Manchester United squad last summer but managed to take them only to a sixth place finish in the domestic league table.

However, they did qualify for the Champions League, thanks to a victory over Ajax in the finals of the Europe League last season, which will not help them lure some of the finest talents in world football to Old Trafford this summer.

This has seen him linked with a number of superstars recently and one such player who is now extensively linked with a move to the club is AS Monaco star Fabhinho.

The Brazilian international was instrumental in the title challenge that was successful for the French outfit while he also helped them to the semi-final of the Champions League, where they lost to Italian giants Juventus.

However, he remains one of the most versatile players in his country and has been a target for Manchester United for quite a while now.

But it is now reported that they have dropped their interest in the 23-year old and are looking more locally for additions.

According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, United are now no longer in the race to sign Fabinho but are now looking at Chelsea’s Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The midfielder was instrumental in the title-winning season under Antonio Conte as he was the first choice to partner N Golo Kante in the middle of the field.

However, Conte is expected to add a new face to his midfield, pushing him down the pecking order, and this might tempt Matic into a reunion at Old Trafford next season.

Matic was one of the first names on the team sheet in Mourinho’s time at the Stamford Bridge and reports today suggest that he could be handed a similar role in Manchester.

The Portuguese gaffer wants Paul Pogba to find an able defensive midfielder who can complement him next season and Matic certainly fits the bill.

However, the same report also claims that Conte will not be willing to sell to local rivals and that Manchester United might not be able to land him this summer after all.

Do you think Matic will move to Old Trafford this summer?
