Real Madrid are looking for a new centre-back this summer and have drawn up a three-man shortlist this week. Bayern Munich star Niklas Sule and Chelsea defenders Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta are all identified as possible summer signings by manager Carlo Ancelotti, according to Defensa Central.
La Liga giants lost Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane last summer and signed Bayern Munich star David Alaba on a free transfer. Alaba is a natural left-back but is capable of playing in the centre as well, and he has been excellent in that position at Santiago Bernabeu this season. But Carlo Ancelotti is now looking for a natural central defender and shifting Alaba to a left-back position.
Alaba has been partnered by Brazilian youngster Eder Militao in the defence and Nacho and Jesus Vallejo are being rotational options. Real Madrid have conceded just 20 goals in 22 matches third in the fewest goals allowed charts, in La Liga this season. But both Nacho and Militao are not natural centre-backs and we might witness a new signing replacing either of them to partner Alaba.
Real Madrid To Focus On More Free Transfers?
Real Madrid are expected to bid big on signing a new forward this summer, most probably on Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland. So Los Blancos are planning to target free transfers for defensive reinforcements and they have plenty of options to look out for. European clubs can contact players directly who have less than six months remaining on their current contract.
Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger was strongly linked with the La Liga move last summer but Chelsea managed to hold on to German defender. The 28-year-old centre-back is one of the best defenders in the world right now but has just six months remaining on his Blues contract. Chelsea are looking to extend his Stamford Bridge stay with an improved contract offer but the German is demanding much higher wages.
The Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer. The versatile Spanish defender has been with West London giants for the last 10 years and it has been reported that he is looking for La Liga return this summer. The 32-year-old centre-back has been a regular starter for the manager Thomas Tuchel this season with 2 assists in 27 overall appearances.
Bayern Munich have already started looking for Niklas Sule replacements after confirming that the player will not extend his contract which expires this summer. The 26-year-old ball-playing defender will be one of the hottest property on the market this summer and Real Madrid are already leading the race for Sule, according to the report above.
