Revealed: Arsenal Have Used Option To Extend Contract Of Star Midfielder For Another Year
Arsene Wenger will be frustrated with his team’s recent performances as his Arsenal side have lost their chance to compete for silverware in two different competitions in as many games.
The Gunners have dropped plenty of points in the Premier League recently and their thumping in the hands of Bayern Munich at the Allianz has all but ended their Champions League hopes.
The manager will be gutted at how his team have failed to capitalize on the chance they got since the turn of the year and will also rue the number of injuries that have cost them a game or two this season.
The Gunners are currently without the services of Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny both of whom are injured but not before Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla was ruled out for the rest of the season.
The 32-year-old has not featured since being forced off during the second half of Arsenal’s 6-0 Champions League group win against Ludogorets on October 19.
Following an operation on the plantaris tendon in the Spain international’s right foot, the Premier League club expected his rehabilitation to take around three more months.
It has become a regular occurrence for the Gunners who have not been able to play the Spaniard consistently as he has constantly been hit by injuries.
So a lack of consistent performances have seen him linked with an exit with the likes of Fenerbahce ready to snap him up in the summer.
However, commenting on Arsenal’s latest financial reports Gunners chairman Sir Chips Keswick has hinted that Arsenal have used the option to extend his contract for another year.
‘Francis Coquelin, Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud have all signed new contracts, while we have taken up options to extend the contracts of Per Mertesacker and Santi Cazorla.
‘Further work is required in the area of contract renewals and we will continue to invest rationally in our squad retention,” said Sir Chips, talking in an interview recently.
At 32, Cazorla’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season and having failed to help the side this season, it was understood that Wenger would be happy to let him go.
He has also been looking for replacements already but it now looks like the manager wants to try and take another year out of him, next season.
Do you think Arsenal should sell Cazorla this summer?
