BCCI president Sourav Ganguly stated that the Women’s T20 Challenge will be back this year as it will be held during the IPL playoffs. Notable that the Women’s T20 Challenge was cancelled last year as the IPL was moved to UAE midway amid the Covid outbreak.

Ganguly also assured that BCCI would plan to host a full-fledged Women’s IPL as there will be more available players for the tournament.

Notable that Australia, England, and New Zealand all started their own women’s T20 leagues but BCCI hasn’t made any progress in this regard as they continued with the idea of Women’s T20 consisting of 4 matches.

“The Women’s T20 Challenge will again be back this year in the month of May. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to host a bigger women’s IPL once the number of women players goes up. But this year, the Women’s T20 Challenge will happen during the IPL playoffs,” Sourav Ganguly spoke to Sportstar.

Ganguly also stated that all domestic tournaments will be resumed once Covid cases settle down a bit.

We have time for the Cooch Behar Trophy. Let this COVID settle down a bit, we can hold it because it is just at the knockout stage and only a few matches are pending. We can do it in April-May, Similarly, with the women’s tournament, we will do it as well. We are presuming that in another month, the number of cases will go down and we can host it,” he added.

Women’s T20 Challenge was first time held in 2018 when it was just a one-off match between IPL Supernovas and IPL Trailblazers then from next year onwards another team in the form of ‘IPL velocity’ has been added.

IPL Supernovas captained by Harmanpreet Kaur won the title twice while Trailblazers won the most recent edition under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana. The third team ‘IPL Velocity’ has been captained by India’s legendary player Mithali Raj.

India women’s team is currently in New Zealand where they will play a bilateral series against New Zealand then they will talk part in the ODI World Cup starting on March 4.
