WWE News: WWE Had To Make Major Changes To Royal Rumble Including Kurt Angle
Royal Rumble 2019 was overall a successful pay per view despite what the haters might want to say. Unlike the last two years, it could actually match up to the hypes with the first dual-brand PPV event of the year. Two predicted winners stood tall to end the Rumble match making the fans happy. It was Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey who won the women and men’s division battle royals to secure their rightful spots at Wrestlemania 35.
Now some of the fans might go on to complain that the surprise elements were pretty less in this year’s Royal Rumble match. In the men’s division contest, only Jeff Jarrett was the surprise entrant from the past. Sure there were multiple NXT entrants in different spots throughout the match but they might not get counted since being part of the active roster.
Another name may have been Kurt Angle who entered the Royal Rumble at number 4. He’s been making sporadic appearances on WWE Raw over the last several months. So it depends on the fans whether they want to put it as a surprise appearance or a regular one. But the original plan was something else wiping out the chances of a Hall of Famer appearance.
As per the reports of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Kurt Angle was not the original choice to enter Royal Rumble match. It is a justified choice since he has nothing to prove at this point gunning for a Wrestlemania main event spotlight. Zack Ryder was the original name put on the 4th spot.
But WWE changed the script at the last moment to accommodate Kurt Angle in the match. They felt that this would earn a huge pop from the crowd. It’s quite obvious considering he is multi-time world champion aka a veteran in this business. Ultimately, Kurt Angle was not able to long last in the Royal Rumble. He was there for just three minutes and fifteen seconds before Shinsuke Nakamura eliminated him.
Officials had to come up with some more changes as the women’s Royal Rumble match progressed. Apparently, the women superstars were not able to make it to the match walking through the long entrance ramp in time. So they had to cut short some of the segments, probably. The source did not mention what those changes were exactly are. But it did not affect the match to a big extent, thankfully.
