Her lively, energetic attitude helped the USA’s ‘Final Five’ gymnasts clinch the Olympic gold medal in the team final. Laurie Hernandez gave a cheeky wink to the judges after ensured the Gold. Her tactic seemed to work after they awarded her sassy routine a score of 14.833, that sent her and team mates Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman to victory.

Then straight after receiving her coveted gold medal the New Jersey native couldn’t wait to snap a selfie and tell her older brother Marcus about her win as he posted the picture on Instagram, praising his sister for being ‘the toughest 16-year-old I’ve ever met.’

Dubbed the ‘human emoji’ thanks to her expressive face when competing, Hernandez took on the floor exercise, vault and beam in last night’s team final. She was the first competitor on vault scoring 15.100 before adding a score of 15.233 to the team’s total for her beam routine.

Laurie’s brother Marcus, who posted the jubilant picture of his sister proudly holding her winning medal, wrote on Instagram: ‘The selfie I get from my sis right after she competed even though I haven’t even watched it yet on NBC.

“But anyways I am so proud of who you are and what you’ve accomplished. We were talking about this being a possibility a decade ago and to see it actually happen is too much for me to handle.”

It’s blowing my mind how the same little girl I used to see doing flips on my bed at age 6 now has a gold medal. I have seen you deal with so much adversity with the sport over the last several years and to finally see your hard work culminate makes it all worth it,” said Laurie.

“You’re the toughest little 16 year old I’ve ever met and I’m not saying that just cause I’m a proud bro. Remember to give God his glory always! Love you sis and can’t wait to see you kill it Monday as well,” she added.

She will go up against her Team USA counterpart Simone Biles and six other gymnasts for another shot of an Olympic title. But her floor routine won’t be seen again at the Olympic Games as new stricter rules meant she did not earn a place in the final even though she finished fourth in qualification.
