Narsingh Yadav

Just when the people back here in India were celebrating the win of Sakshi Malik and P.V. Sindhu, the same time the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was deciding the fate of wrestler Narsingh Yadav which blew away his hopes and desires. The court has decided to overturn the decision made by Indian anti-doping body and NADA. Along with that, they slapped Narsingh with a ban of four years which starts today itself.

It means that now Narsingh cannot participate in the wrestling match which is scheduled to take place on Friday. He has to vacate the games village by Friday morning as per the rules.

“The CAS panel did not accept the argument of the athlete that he was a victim of sabotage and noted that there was no evidence that he bore no fault, nor that the anti-doping rule violation was not intentional. Therefore, the standard four-year period of ineligibility was imposed on the by the panel,” an official release of CAS said.

While commenting on the judgement, Indian contingent’s chef-de-mission Rakesh Gupta told TOI “It is so unfortunate. After getting the clearance from NADA, we had written to the world wrestling body, the International Olympic Committee and also the Organising Committee of the Rio Games. They had accepted Narsingh’s entry and that is the reason he travelled with us,”

“When we were assured that everything was fine, then we suddenly got a letter from world anti-doping body WADA three days back that it had appealed against Narsingh’s entry in the Rio Games. We asked for time but they gave us 48 hours. We tried to present our case and were confident but have got this shocking news now.

“Narsingh will be a shattered man today. His career has been ruined. It is so unfortunate,” he adds.

Narsingh Yadav’s urine sample was tested positive for steroid methandienone on June 25 and July 5 but he challenged the decision in front of Indian panel saying that someone deliberately added the banned substance to his food to sabotage his career but the CAS has not accepted the Narsingh’s theory and instead banned him for four years.

It’s a major jolt to India’s hopes as all were expecting a medal from wrestling contingent but this decision has shocked the Indian people cheering for Narsingh Yadav. Now Yogeshwar Dutt seems to be last hope for India who can win a medal in wrestling.
