Rafael Nadal will return to Hamburg after a gap of 7 years in order to boost his confidence and to earn points to qualify for the ATP world tour finals.
Nadal in his pre-tournament press conference said that “Every time I start the second half of the season, I begin from scratch. In the second half of the year, I’m always in search of points. I have to add points in the rankings, and not only defend it, but to end the season in a good position,”
Rafa’s coach, uncle Toni also has similar thoughts like Nadal has. He does not hide the fact that his nephew is the main candidate for the title in the ATP 500, in which he is the top seed followed by Tommy Robredo and Bautista Agut. “We go to Hamburg with the thought of being able to win. We know it will not be easy, but I think, considering the last practices on clay, Rafa will be ready to be probably the favorite to triumph,” said Toni. “Truth is, we trained very well. In recent months it goes like this: we train well, and then we do not have sufficient consistency in the matches. We play Hamburg with the intention of winning a good amount of points, so we have more confidence for the rest of the season,” he concluded
Toni Nadal further explained that the choice of returning on clay after Wimbledon and before the North American season on hard. “For him, the transition from one surface to another is always a problem. However, I think that playing the Hamburg will help him. If he will play a good tournament, he will play tournaments in America with more confidence.”
Nadal has been seeded no.1 in the tournament as his fellow countrymen David Ferrer has withdrawn from the tournament due to an elbow injury.
