Rafael Nadal reigns in Stuttgart

Praveen / 14 June 2015

Rafael Nadal made a rollicking start in the grass court season by winning the Mercedes cup in Stuttgart. After losing to the World no 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets at Roland Garros weeks back, Nadal was very determined to start off the Grass season in a positive manner. He managed to beat Serbia’s Victor Troicki in straight sets 7-6(7-3),6-3 to lift the Mercedes cup.

Nadal has been serving well throughout the tournament which was a key element to his success. Nadal served 11 aces today with highest first serve percentage of 75 and an impressive second serve percentage of 80. Nadal got better throughout the tournament with his last two important victories came in straight sets, when the first two matches he played went on to the decider. Nadal saved his best for the Semi-Finals and Finals.

This has been Nadal’s first grass court final since the Wimbledon 2011. Nadal has managed to win a title in grass after a period of five years and in 2015 he couldn’t win a single clay title in the European clay court swing which was very unlike him.  This victory would be a huge confidence booster for the rest of the grass court season for Nadal.

Nadal will further play in Queen’s in a couple of days time which he won way back in 2008. However, the biggest challenge for Nadal would be beating inform Wawrinka who is fresh from the French Open triumph. Wawrinka is drawn in the same half as Nadal and there is a possibility of Nadal facing krygios who defeated him in Wimbledon last year.

Beating a top 10 player with the likes of Wawrinka,Murray at Queen’s  would further determine Nadal’s chances at Wimbledon. As for Nadal this victory would be a tremendous boost for him to compete at the highest level in the upcoming grass court tournaments.
