The Australian Open and the first Grand Slam of the year is almost here. Here are Sportzwiki’s Top-5 Women contenders for the Australian Open 2015 title.
1. Maria Sharapova –
Maria’s collection of trophies for the year for the year has begun by defeating Ana Ivanovic at the Brisbane final. This will give the former champion a lot of confidence going into the Australian Open. Maria had a good season last year finishing Number 2 in the world with some steady consistent performances.
Maria is seeded 2nd at the tournament and will be looking forward to pick up her 2nd Grand Slam title qualifying her as a definite Top-5 contender in the Women’s section for the Australia Open 2015.
2. Serena Williams –
Serena did not have an exciting Australian Open campaign last year but that does not put her anywhere below in the race for winning this title. She is one of the most dominant women players on all the surfaces and her consistency makes her greater.
Serena did lose a match at the start of the year but her Grand Slam record is better than almost everyone out there putting her ahead in the race of the contenders for the Australian Open 2015 title. Serena has won the Australian Open 5 times giving her a lot of confidence to win the tournament. Serena ranks World Number 1 in the world at present but has a relatively tricky path to the final as per the draw.
3. Simona Halep –
This young player has the ability to trouble quite a few people in game. Simona is in the best form of her career and her game makes her a strong contender for the title. Simona has already won a title this year at Shenzhen Open and this will give her a lot of confidence to compete in the Australian Open. Simona is seeded third at the Open.
4. Ana Ivanovic –
Back in form and back in the Top-5 in the world rankings the former world number 1 will be looking forward to nothing less than winning the title. She is surely in good form and has a lot of confidence going into the tournament as she has already played a final this year and has the experience of playing in big tournaments. Ana is seeded 5th at the Australian Open and is surely a Top contender for the Australian Open 2015 title.
5. Eugenie Bouchard –
One of the most exciting young players on the WTA tour Eugenie Bouchard is for sure one of the top contender for the title. Last year she made an amazing display of her talent and potential at the Australian Open 2014. She has already defeated some top players in the game and has proved that she is not all about beauty.
Last year Eugenie played 3 Grand Slam semi-finals including the Australian Open and has kind of been on a dream run ever since then. This year she would be sure looking to convert these good performances into a title. Genie is seeded 7th at the Australian Open 2015.
