Twin top rankings reflect rise of women in Indian sports: Saina Nehwal
After reclaiming the number 1 rank in BWF rankings just few days ago, Saina Nehwal is doubly delighted that Saina Mirza rose to top of rankings in doubles rankings in Tennis and that the twin top rankings achievement reflects the rise of woman power in domain of Indian sports.
Women in sports have come up in big way in the recent past. The Indian women have done a great job of winning medals for the country in different sports. These Indian women sportspersons like Mary Kom in Boxing, Krishna Poonia in Athletics, Heena Sindhu in Shooting, Babita Kumari and other upcoming Indian women players have made the country proud in international events which include Asian games and Olympics.
Saina Nehwal became the first Indian woman to be ranked 1 on March 29 after winning the Indian open Grand Prix. She dropped to number 2 overtaken by Li Xuerui losing in the semi-finals in Malaysian Open Super Series. Saina Nehwal regained the top spot after Li Xureui pulled out of Singapore Super Series.
In tennis, Sania Mirza won her third consecutive WTA title – the Family Circle Cup with her new partner Martina Higgins. Saina Nehwal won the bronze medal at the Olympics in 2012 and raised hopes of Indian women to participate in international events.
Mary Kom won the bronze medal in London Olympics. Khusbir Kaur became the first Indian women to win a silver medal in the Asian games 2014 in 20km walk which shows the power of Indian women.
Saina Nehwal has been inspiration for young players. Saina Nehwal’s main aim is the Rio Olympics. Indian women have shown that they can compete with world’s best and with proper infrastructure. China too produced a lot of female players which have done extremely well in Olympics and Asian games.
